Escape from the Red Center
The Toilet Lever
Moira dismantles a toilet and uses the lever to threaten Aunt Elizabeth. She forces the Aunt to undress, puts on her clothes, and ties her up behind the furnace. Moira marches out of the Center with the bearing of an Aunt, saluted by the Angels.
The First Safe House
Moira walks through checkpoints, bluffing her way. She remembers a Quaker couple from the mailing list. They take her in, burn the Aunt's outfit, and pass her to another house on the Underground Femaleroad.
The Journey North
Moira is moved from house to house, eventually in a mail sack across the bridge. She almost makes it to Canada but is captured just before a boat escape. She is taken to a facility where she is interrogated and shown a film about the Colonies.
Capture and Choice

Capture and Choice
The Interrogation
Moira is captured by Eyes. She is interrogated, but she doesn't reveal much. They show her a film about the Colonies, where women clean up toxic waste and die within three years. She is given a choice: the Colonies or Jezebel's.
Choosing Jezebel's
Moira chooses Jezebel's, the government-run brothel for officers. She is sterilized and given a costume. She works nights, serving men. She says the food is not bad, and there are drugs and drink. She has given up on resistance.
Meeting Offred
At Jezebel's, Moira meets Offred, who is there with the Commander. They talk in the washroom. Moira is indifferent, resigned. Offred is horrified but also relieved to see her alive. Moira tells her story, but without hope.
Moira's Fate

Moira's Fate
The Last Sight
Offred sees Moira at Jezebel's, dressed as a rabbit. They hug and talk. Moira says she is still there, but the fire is gone. Offred wants gallantry from her, but Moira is just surviving.
The Unfinished Story
Offred never sees Moira again. She imagines Moira blowing up Jezebel's, but knows it didn't happen. Moira's story ends in ambiguity. She may have been sent to the Colonies or died. Offred keeps her alive by telling her story.
The Meaning
Moira represents the possibility of resistance, but also its limits. Her fate shows the cost of defiance. Offred uses Moira's memory as a source of strength, even as she herself compromises.
